Would it be cheaper to have a contractor build a home on a plot of land or put a modular home on it?

We have been looking at modular homes, but with the added costs of set-up and transport, it is adding up. Just wondering if it would be cheaper just to have some on build one from the ground up

Probably not, but the only way to know for sure is to get estimates for your area and land from local people. There are many variables. If you think the cost of a modular is adding up, just wait till you see how the costs of custom-building a home can add up.
