I have never purchased or been in a Homes of Merit modular home but I can give you a couple tips. First, Homes of Merit is the manufacturer of the homes so even if they manufacture the perfect home in the factory, your overall satisfaction is still going to depend a lot on the builder that completes the job. So you want to do a little research on the builder as well as the manufacturer. Also, keep in mind that some of the choices you make may affect the durability and energy-efficiency of the home you buy. I checked out the Homes of Merit website and they do have some beautiful looking homes. I noticed when you look at the details they don’t really list all the specifications that the houses are built with. They just say "This home is built to a state building code". Even though they aren’t listed, I am sure that like any other modular home manufacturer they have a standard set of specifications and options to upgrade the specs if you want. This where you need to do a little research and decide which available upgrades, if any are important to you. For example, since it sounds like you will be living in the home for a long time one thing that you should look for when you see the standard specs are the width of the outside walls. For some companies 2×4 is standard and others 2×6 is standard. If you find that the standard for the home you are looking at is 2×4 you may want to upgrade to 2×6 because this allows for more insulation which will save you money on energy bills and make the house feel more solid in general by insulating you from outside noise. This is just one of thing to consider. Hopefully, you will find the right builder that can help you identify the things that are most important to you in a house. In addition it is really helpful to do some research on your own. I’m sorry I can’t recommend a builder in your area but I am always researching different builders and companies for a modular homes website I run so you may be able to get some ideas there on the "Florida" page. http://www.modularresource.com

There are problems with ANY home: Stick built, manufactured, mod, etc. It’s up to you, as a consumer, to do your research. All mods are built basically the same way. There are no "best" or "worse".
Start shopping, ask questions, and pick the one that fits your budget. Keep in mind that one of the most important considerations is the sales area you buy it from. Unless you do all your own site work, you are dependant on them for the water, sewerage, foundation, permits, etc., and most importantly, the one year warranty that comes with the house.
